Carpenter bees are about ½ to 1 inch (12–25 mm) in length, with a shiny black abdomen, a fuzzy yellow or orange thorax, and large, dark wings.
Carpenter bees get their name from their habit of boring perfectly round holes into wood to create nests. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood but excavate tunnels to lay their eggs. Over time, repeated nesting can weaken wooden structures, making them a nuisance for homeowners.
These bees resemble bumblebees but can be distinguished by their shiny, hairless black abdomen. Males are often seen hovering aggressively near their nests but are harmless since they lack stingers. Females can sting but are not aggressive and will only do so if handled or provoked.
Carpenter bee activity peaks in the spring when they emerge to mate and start tunneling. They prefer untreated or weathered wood, such as decks, fences, sheds, and even wooden furniture. If left unchecked, their tunnels can attract woodpeckers, which further damage the structure in search of bee larvae.
To prevent carpenter bee damage, sealing cracks, painting or staining wood, and using treated lumber can deter them from nesting. However, if you have an ongoing infestation, professional pest control is the best way to eliminate carpenter bees and protect your property. Avayda Pest Control offers targeted treatments to remove carpenter bees and prevent future damage, ensuring your home remains safe from wood-boring pests.
