Roof rats are about 6–8 inches (16–20 cm) long, with a slender body, large ears, a pointed snout, and a long, scaly tail that extends beyond their body length. They have smooth fur, usually brown or black, with a lighter underbelly.
Roof rats, also known as black rats or ship rats, are excellent climbers and prefer to nest in high places such as attics, ceilings, and roof spaces. Unlike Norway rats, which burrow underground, roof rats use trees, power lines, and walls to access buildings, making them particularly challenging to control.
These rodents are highly adaptable and can survive on a variety of food sources, including fruits, seeds, pet food, and even household scraps. Their presence is often detected by signs such as gnaw marks, droppings, greasy rub marks along walls, and scurrying noises in the attic at night.
Roof rats pose serious health risks as they are known carriers of diseases like leptospirosis, salmonella, and plague. They can also cause significant property damage by chewing through wires, insulation, and wood, increasing the risk of electrical fires and structural issues.
Due to their ability to avoid common traps and their rapid reproduction rate, professional extermination is the most effective way to eliminate a roof rat infestation. Avayda Pest Control specializes in targeted rodent control solutions, including exclusion techniques, baiting, and sealing entry points to keep your home rat-free for the long term.
